Everything You Need to Know About Pool Safety Covers

As we near the end of summer, it’s essential to discuss pool safety and the importance of installing a safety cover. A safety cover is a must-have for pool owners, especially those who live in colder climates. Undoubtedly, pool safety covers can be an investment. But, they are well worth it when it comes to safety and security. In this post, we’ll discuss what a pool safety cover is, the different types of covers available and why you should invest in one right away.

What is a Pool Safety Cover?

A pool safety cover is an essential safety feature for a swimming pool that covers the entire surface of the pool. It acts as a barrier that prevents anyone from falling into the pool or drowning. Safety covers are made of durable materials that can withstand the elements, such as snow, wind, and rain. Not only do they improve safety, but they also protect your pool from debris, such as leaves and branches.

Manual Pool Safety Covers

Manual pool safety covers require the owner to manually roll up and roll out the cover. They are ideal for smaller pools, and they are more budget-friendly than an automatic cover. The cover gets anchored to the pool deck using specialized brackets and straps that make it strong enough to hold the weight of people and animals. One of the significant advantages of a manual cover is that it’s easy to install, and it doesn’t require any special training or expertise.

Automatic Pool Safety Covers

Automatic pool safety covers are fully automated, and they can be retracted and opened with the push of a button. They operate using electricity and come with a motor and a pulley system. They are more expensive than manual covers, but they are more convenient and versatile. An automatic cover is undoubtedly a valuable investment for pool owners who value convenience and high-tech features. Once installed, it can be opened or closed at the touch of a button.

Is A Safety Cover Required?

In Kentucky, you are required to have a 4′ barrier around your pool that cannot be climbed. The gate must out-swing and self-close with a special latch – whether you have a safety cover or not. Covering your pool seasonally varies widely per region. Here in Kentucky, it is the custom to “close” pools in the winter and put the safety cover on, but this is optional. We leave our pool open all winter. Why? It is right out our back door – the windows from our kitchen, dining, and living rooms all face the pool, so we enjoy seeing the water all winter instead of a cover. That being said, we have several large trees in our backyard, so this year it’ll be my goal to cover the pool while the leaves are falling and then remove the cover when the leaves are all down.

Conclusion

Pool safety should be a top priority for any pool owner. By investing in a pool safety cover, you are not only protecting your loved ones, but you’re also protecting your pool from debris and damage. Always remember that prevention is key, and a safety cover is an excellent preventative measure to ensure a safe and secure environment. By choosing the right type of safety cover, you can enjoy peace of mind while still enjoying your pool. Stay safe and invest in a pool safety cover today.
