In the world of swimming pools, equipment pads can be as diverse as the brands they feature. Recently, while inspecting a pool equipment pad with my supplier, he made an amusing and enlightening comment. The timing couldn’t be more perfect to share this story with Halloween just around the corner—it’s a tale sure to bring a smile to your face.

The pool in question, a 14×30 vinyl liner pool, had seen better days. Its equipment pad was a mix of various brands—a Hayward pump and filter, a Jandy heater, and a Jacuzzi chlorinator. My supplier chuckled and called it a “Frankenstein pad,” and I couldn’t help but laugh. But as I learned, this setup is more common than you might think.

How Does a “Frankenstein Pad” Happen?

Over the years, as pieces of equipment fail, they are often replaced with whatever brand the service company happens to represent at the time. This practice leads to a patchwork of different brands cobbled together, much like Frankenstein’s monster.

While this approach might work for older pools needing maintenance, it’s not ideal for new pools. Why? When you stick with a single brand, like the Pentair products we offer, you benefit from longer warranties—three years for a complete setup versus just one year for individual parts when brands are mixed.

Why Would Builders Mix Brands?

The answer is simple: cost. Some builders may choose to mix and match brands to save a few hundred dollars. However, this short-term saving could lead to long-term headaches, including mismatched components that might not work optimally together or the hassle of managing multiple warranties.

The Sanctuary Pools Promise

Don’t settle for a piecemeal approach to your pool equipment. At Sanctuary Pools, we ensure you get the best equipment pad money can buy, complete with cohesive functionality and peace of mind. Choose us, and enjoy the confidence that comes with a streamlined, high-quality setup.

Avoid the nightmare of a “Frankenstein” equipment pad—opt for quality and reliability with Sanctuary Pools. Your future self will thank you!

Fall is here, and now is the perfect time to learn how to take care of your pool equipment! A clean pool is essential to ensuring that you and your loved ones have a safe and enjoyable time in the water. But just like any other aspect of home maintenance, keeping your pool clean requires regular attention and proper care. One of the most critical components of pool maintenance is cleaning your pool filters. In this blog post, we’ll explore why maintaining clean pool filters is crucial to the health and longevity of your pool.

1) A Clean Pool Requires Clean Filters

Unless you are vigilant about keeping your pool sparkling clean by skimming debris, using pool vacuums, and brushing the walls and tiles, it is virtually impossible to keep the water clear and algae-free. A pool filter is essential to removing impurities such as dirt, oil, leaves, and bugs that your pool’s skimmer and vacuum cannot capture. Over time, the filters become clogged with debris and require cleaning to restore their effectiveness. Regular cleaning of pool filters is the key to ensuring that your pool water remains clean and clear throughout the swimming season

2) It’s Important for Your Plumbing System

Let’s face it: buying a new pool pump or salt cell isn’t cheap. In fact, properly maintaining your pool can often be more affordable than constantly replacing pool equipment. The filter system is the engine of your pool’s water supply system. An overloaded filter puts a strain on the entire plumbing system. The longer you neglect cleaning your pool filters, the harder your pool pump and salt cell will have to work, leading to unnecessary wear and strain on these expensive components.

3) Balance of Your Water Matters

If your filter becomes too full, it can’t remove impurities from the water efficiently. The salt cell will not run correctly, leading to an increased need for chlorine and other chemicals. You can spend more money on extra chemicals, or you can clean the pool filters. Well-maintained filters allow filtration systems to run efficiently, keep the water pH level, and buffer at optimal levels. You save time and money by regularly cleaning your pool filters.

4) Better Recreational Water

When you maintain your pool filters, you’ll enjoy more than a safe pool. Your water will be clearer, reducing cloudiness that ruins its appearance. Clean water stimulates a refreshed swimmers’ environment as less dirt and debris circulate through the pool. Water clarity makes it easy to keep track of the swimmers at all times. Kids love swimming in a clean pool. Parents will enjoy the peace of mind that comes from a safer swimming environment.

5) Longevity of Pool Equipment

Proper maintenance is a cheaper route to extend the lifetime of your pool equipment. Allowing your filters to run with debris in them means your pool motors work harder, resulting in pump burnouts. The more debris, the more the pool pump has to work, without proper maintenance reducing pool equipment lifespans. Keep your pool and cleaner to get more out of your investment over time to enjoy quality pool fun.

Conclusion:

Keeping your pool in optimal condition requires regular attention and proper maintenance, and cleaning your pool filters is a vital aspect of that maintenance. Clean pool filters ensure that your pool water is healthy, clear, and enjoyable for everyone, and they keep your entire pool plumbing system running smoothly. By keeping your pool filters clean, you can save money on costly repairs and replacement equipment and enjoy a pool that remains in top condition for years to come. So take a few minutes each week to check and clean your pool filters and make every swim a safe and enjoyable experience.

Pool automation is the future of pool maintenance and enjoyment. It makes pool life easier, more efficient and saves you time and energy. With this option, you can control your pool from your phone, and have it run on a schedule of your choice. In this blog, we will discuss pool automation options and how it can make your life easier.

What is Pool Automation?

Pool automation is the use of technology to control your pools equipment, such as pumps, filters, heaters, and lights. It’s a convenient and efficient way to manage your pool. It also has several benefits. First, it saves time, energy, and money. With automated pool equipment, you don’t have to manually turn on the pool pump, filter, or heater. Second, it ensures proper water balance and chemical levels, avoiding costly mistakes. Lastly, it improves pool safety, since you can remotely control pool features such as lights and waterfalls.

Pool Automation Options

When it comes to pool automation, there are several options to choose from:

Manual Operation: This is the most basic option. It involves manually operating the pool equipment, such as turning on the pool pump and filter.

EasyTouch Automation by Pentair: This is the next level of automation. It controls lights, pool heater, pool pump, and water features. It’s easy to use and can be controlled remotely. Learn more about EasyTouch Automation here!

IntelliCenter Automation by Pentair: This is the most expensive but most user-friendly option. It controls lights, pool heater, spa heater, pool pump, water features, chlorinator, water chemicals, and can be controlled remotely. Learn more about Intellicenter Automation here!

How to Choose the Best Automation Option for your Pool?

When choosing a pool automation option, you need to consider your budget, your pools size, and the features you want to control. If you have a small pool and are on a budget, manual operation might be the best option. If you have a larger pool and want convenience and ease of use, the EasyTouch by Pentair might be your best bet. For those who want the ultimate pool experience, the IntelliCenter by Pentair is the way to go.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, pool automation is an excellent investment for pool owners, as it saves time, energy, and money. Understanding the different options, their benefits, and limitations will guide you in choosing the best system for your pool. By selecting the right option, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your pool with minimal effort. Invest in automation and make your life easier today!

A pool is a wonderful place to relax and unwind during hot summers, but the swimming season doesn’t have to end with the change of season! With a gas pool heater, you can reopen your swimming pool earlier in the spring and keep it open well into fall. Gas pool heaters are a popular choice for pool owners because they are efficient, affordable, and reliable. If you’re considering installing a gas pool heater, you’re in the right place. In this blog post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about gas heaters for your pool.

Benefits of Pool Heaters:

Installing a gas pool heater offers a number of benefits such as extending your swimming season. Earlier opening and later closing of your pool will allow you to use the pool for longer periods, as well as enjoy an extended swimming pool party season. Everyone knows that swimming when the water is cool isn’t fun. A gas pool heater will heat up your pool, making it more comfortable for those who love to swim and play in the water, making it an all-around family-fun activity.

Cost of Pool Heater:

It’s understandable that the increase in your gas bill will be a concern if you’re considering getting a gas pool heater installed. However, gas pool heaters have come a long way with technology changes and efficiency improvements. This means you can enjoy pool water temperature up to 80F without hefty energy costs. If you’re worried about your energy bills skyrocketing, keep in mind that your pool heater should have an efficiency rating of at least 82 percent, which is something you should consider when choosing the right model.

Pool Heater Requirements:

When you’re planning to install a gas heater for your pool, some essential requirements must be met such as accessible gas lines. Some heat models will need their gas line runs, so ensure that this is accounted for in your plan. You’ll also need a professional to help with hook up the heater. Without an expert installation, you run the risk of causing damage to the heater and increasing the risk of any unnecessary hazard.

Models:

When it comes time to pick a gas pool heater, there are various models to choose from. Each model has different heating capabilities and will depend on the size of your swimming pool. Based on the size of your pool, some models will be more suitable for your needs.

For instance:-

125k BTU: pools up to 10,000 gallons

175k BTU: pools up to 15,000 gallons

250k BTU: pools up to 20,000 gallons

200k BTU: small to medium-sized pools up to 17,000 gallons

400k BTU: pools up to 40,000 gallons

Conclusion:

Keeping your pool clean and the water circulating is key to enjoying a refreshing swim during the hot summer months. However, keeping your pool running can be costly, both in terms of money and energy consumption. That’s where variable speed pumps come in – they offer pool owners a more efficient and cost-effective option to keep their pools running smoothly. Here at Sanctuary Pools, we have seen tremendous success with variable speed pumps and would like to share some valuable information with you on why they could be a great investment for your pool.

What are Variable Speed Pumps?

Variable speed pumps are a type of pool pump that can adjust their operating speed to meet your pool’s specific needs. With most pool pumps, the motor is either on or off. However, variable speed pumps can adjust their speed from low to high, providing a wide range of options for pool owners. This means that they offer greater flexibility and control over your pool’s water circulation and filtration system.

The Benefits of Variable Speed Pumps

Variable speed pumps have many advantages over traditional pool pumps, both in terms of energy efficiency and operational costs. Since they can adjust their speed, they require less energy to operate – up to 90% less than older, single-speed pumps. That means that variable speed pumps can save you a significant amount of money on your energy bill. Additionally, they are more durable and have a longer lifespan compared to other types of pool pumps.

Installation and Maintenance

Installing a variable speed pump is not much different than installing a traditional pool pump. However, it’s important to note that these pumps require more complicated wiring. Thus, it’s important to have a qualified electrician perform the installation. These pumps are also easier to maintain than traditional pumps since they have less moving parts and operate at a lower speed. This means that variable speed pumps require less upkeep over their lifetime.

How to Choose the Right Variable Speed Pump

Choosing the right variable speed pump for your pool is important to ensure the pump meets your pool’s unique needs. Make sure to choose a pump with the right horsepower for the size of your pool. This will help ensure that the pump will be able to circulate the water properly. Additionally, you should consider pumps that are ENERGY STAR certified to save even more energy and money.

Financial Considerations

While these pumps can seem like a large initial investment, they can save you a significant amount of money over time. In fact, according to ENERGY STAR, pool owners who replaced their single-speed pumps with variable speed pumps saw a 65% reduction in energy costs. This means that the pump can pay for itself in just a few years.

Conclusion:

Investing in a variable speed pump for your pool can provide a range of benefits, from saving energy and money to having more control over the water circulation and filtration system. While the initial cost may seem high, it’s important to consider the long-term savings and benefits of switching to more efficient technology. Plus, with proper installation and maintenance, the pump can last for many years to come. At Sanctuary Pools, we highly recommend these pumps as a wise and effective investment for pool owners.

If you have a pool in your backyard, you want to make sure that it stays clean and safe for your family and friends to enjoy. One of the best ways to ensure this is by using a pool salt cell chlorinator. At Sanctuary Pools, we highly recommend this method of pool sanitization because it’s more efficient and cost-effective in the long run. In this blog post, we’ll share with you everything you need to know about pool salt cell chlorinators.

What is a pool salt cell chlorinator?

A pool salt cell chlorinator is a device that uses electrolysis to convert salt into chlorine in your pool water. The salt cell is installed in the plumbing system of your pool, and as the water flows through it, the salt in the water is converted into chlorine gas. This chlorine gas then dissolves into the water, which sanitizes it and keeps it clean.

How does it work?

The salt cell chlorinator works by producing chlorine gas from the salt in your pool water. The gas is then dissolved into the water, where it sanitizes the pool and kills bacteria and algae. The salt cell then regenerates itself by reversing the polarity of the electrodes, so the electrode that was producing the chlorine gas now produces hydrogen gas. This process prevents the build-up of scale and calcium deposits on the electrode, which can reduce the efficiency of the system over time.

Benefits of using a pool salt cell chlorinator

One of the primary benefits of using a salt cell chlorinator is that it’s more cost-effective in the long run. While it may have a higher upfront cost, it eliminates the need to purchase and store chlorine tablets or liquid. It also reduces the maintenance required to keep your pool clean since it produces a steady supply of chlorine without any intervention needed. It’s also better for the environment since it reduces the amount of harsh chemicals needed to sanitize your pool.

How to choose the right salt cell chlorinator for your pool

When choosing a salt cell chlorinator, there are a few factors to consider. First, you need to choose a model that’s compatible with the size of your pool. You also need to consider the size of the salt cell, as a larger cell will produce more chlorine and require less frequent regeneration. Finally, you should look for a model that’s easy to install, has a long lifespan, and is easy to maintain.

Maintenance and care

To keep your salt cell chlorinator working efficiently, you need to perform regular maintenance and care. This includes checking the water chemistry regularly to ensure that the salt concentration is within the recommended range, cleaning the cell regularly to remove any calcium or scale build-up, and inspecting the electrodes to ensure that they’re in good condition. With proper maintenance, your salt cell chlorinator can last for many years.

Conclusion:

A salt cell chlorinator is a great investment for any pool owner looking to keep their pool clean and safe without the hassle of constant upkeep and harsh chemicals. By understanding how they work and what to look for in a model, you can choose the right salt cell chlorinator for your pool and enjoy the benefits of a crystal clear and healthy swimming environment.

A Pool Plumbing System is a simple concept, but it is like a foreign language if you’ve never owned a pool before! Hopefully, this helps!

Pool Water

First, the pool water is piped around in a big circle: from the pool to the equipment and back. This is to clean (filter) and treat (the chlorinator) the water, so it doesn’t get gross. The pump is what keeps the water moving. The heater is just a sweet upgrade. The plumbing coming from the pool is the “supply” (or suction) side. From the equipment back to the pool is called the “return” side. Here is a simple diagram:

Valves

Part of the plumbing system is valves. The valves are like doors in your house. Just like you can close the doors in your home to keep people or pets out of a room, you can close the valves on your plumbing to stop water from being pulled from or sent to specific water features.

The “supply” side valves (remember supply side is from the pool to the equipment) will typically have one valve for the skimmer, one valve for the main drains (you have two main drains), and, if you have a spa, a valve for the spa drain.

If you have a pool with no water features, you may not have valves on the “return” side (return is from the equipment back to the pool) side. But, if you have deck jets, a slide, a waterfall, etc. Each one of those should have a valve. Let me make this clear: EACH feature should have a valve. So if you have 4 deck jets, there should be four valves—one for each deck jet.

Learning to operate the valves is an essential part of using your pool. It is easy but takes a little getting used to. To help our clients, we paint your pipes all black and then label what each pipe is from or to.

Closing

So, there is no mystery to how a pool works. However, it often feels that way because so much is hidden underground, and it is often hard to grasp what you can’t see. Hopefully, you will find this pool plumbing system explanation helps you grasp the concept so you can be more knowledgeable about your pool and how it works.
