Sanctuary Pools: The Complete Pool Building Experience

Pool Building on YouTube

May 4, 2020

Okay, I admit it. The quarantine has gotten to me this weekend. Combined with a lot of rain, I resorted to watching pool building on YouTube.

It was a lot like watching a train wreck over and over again. I guess from the standpoint of job stability, I’ll always have a pool to remodel or rebuild because it was really, really bad.

The techniques I saw employed video after video may work in some other area of the country (but I doubt it!). I want to stress to you, those techniques will not work in the Louisville or Prospect area of Kentucky!

If you want to know the cost of a fiberglass pool installation, using the correct techniques and good equipment, check out my blog posts Case Study #1 and Fiberglass Pool Cost: Essential.  And there is also this blog by Nesting with Grace about the new pool she just had installed along with a cost!

Just know, never will I ever resort to using any of the “cost-saving” measures I witnessed pool builders using in those videos. If I have a client that has a budget so low that would actually need to employ the techniques I saw – I will pass on the project, every single time.

Here are the major mistakes that really jumped out at me after I watched SEVERAL YouTube videos:

  1. Backing filling with dirt/soil/earth is NEVER okay.
  2. Pouring your concrete pool deck right on top of the ground is NEVER okay.
  3. Not reinforcing your concrete pool deck with rebar is a recipe for settling and displacing is the not so distant future.
  4. Moving a fiberglass shell with a sky track is NOT okay.

These methods are not professional. So if you’re planning to go with the lowest bid, ask about these things. You may still make a choice to go with the least expensive bid, but at least now you understand you are getting a product that will have a short life span.

Normally, YouTube is my go-to for learning how to do something new.  But in the case of pool building, I would avoid it.  Hiring a reputable pool builder and checking all the references is so important!!
